The Whipped Tallow Body Butter is lighter in texture — airy and easy to spread — making it better suited for all-over body use. It’s available in four scent options including unscented.

Both are made with the same core ingredients and the same grass-fed tallow. It really comes down to texture preference and how you want to use it.

A little goes a very long way. Start with a small amount — about the size of a pea for your face, a bit more for your body. Warm it between your fingers first (especially for the balm), then press and pat into your skin. If it feels greasy, you’ve used too much. Less is more with tallow.

Most customers apply after a shower or bath while skin is still slightly damp — the tallow helps seal in that moisture. Many also use it as a nighttime moisturizer. There’s no wrong time. Use it when your skin feels like it needs it.

Absolutely. We actually make a dedicated face cream specifically formulated for facial use. You can also use the Dense Tallow Balm or the Whipped Body Butter on your face — many of our customers do. Start with a small amount and see how your skin responds. Those new to tallow may notice a brief adjustment period (1–2 weeks) as the skin recalibrates.

A 2 oz jar of the Dense Tallow Balm typically lasts two months or more with daily face and spot use. The Whipped Body Butter will go faster if you’re using it all over. Travel-size (0.5 oz) jars are a great way to try a product before committing to a full size.

Tallow has a natural scent — when rendered properly, it’s mild and close to the smell of butter. Occasionally a subtle beefy note can come through, which is completely normal and a sign you’re getting the real thing with nothing masked or hidden.

We never add synthetic fragrance to any of our products. When we do add scent, it comes only from organic essential oils, botanical absolutes, or slow herbal infusions — plant-based aromatics that complement the tallow rather than cover it up.

We source our beef suet from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle raised on pasture in North Dakota and South Dakota. We know where it comes from and we’re proud of that. Sourcing locally and from farms we trust is non-negotiable for us.

It means we render (melt and purify) the tallow ourselves, in our own kitchen, in small batches. We don’t purchase pre-made tallow from a supplier. This gives us complete control over quality at every step — from raw fat to finished product. It’s more work, but it’s the only way we’re willing to do it.

We use dry rendering — slow, low heat with no added water. This method preserves the nutrients in the tallow and produces a cleaner, more shelf-stable fat. If additional purification is needed, we may use a wet process as a finishing step — but our primary method is always dry rendering to protect the integrity and nutrient profile of the fat.

Where possible, yes — but organic certification is just the starting point for us, not the finish line. What matters more is trusting the vendor and their process. We want to know that the people growing and sourcing these ingredients actually care about quality, not just hitting a marketing checkbox.

We research our suppliers, understand how they operate, and choose partners whose standards align with ours. If a certified organic ingredient comes from a vendor we don’t trust, we won’t use it. If a small, reputable grower produces something exceptional without the certification paperwork, we’ll consider it. The integrity behind the ingredient matters as much as the label on it.

Not at all — it’s still perfectly good. Temperature changes during shipping are normal and don’t affect quality or effectiveness. To restore the texture of a soft or melted tallow product:

• Place the jar (lid on) in the refrigerator for 15–30 minutes
• Once firm again, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before use
• For whipped body butter that has lost its airy texture, you can also gently re-whip it with a clean fork or spoon

This is a natural occurrence with tallow products and has nothing to do with quality. Graininess happens when the tallow cools too quickly after melting — certain fatty acids crystallize at slightly different rates. To fix it, gently warm the jar (place it in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes), stir, then allow it to cool slowly at room temperature away from drafts.

Store your Desert Rose Tallow products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Room temperature (below 75°F) is ideal. Avoid storing in bathrooms with high humidity, as moisture can affect the product. If you live in a warm climate or it’s summer, keeping your products in a cool cabinet or even the refrigerator works well. Do not freeze.

With proper storage, our products are fresh for 12–18 months. All products carry a best-by date. The absence of water in our formulas is a big reason for this — water is what causes most natural products to spoil quickly. We also use no synthetic preservatives.

Yes, please. Always use clean, dry fingers or a clean spatula to scoop from the jar. Introducing water or bacteria into the product is the fastest way to shorten its shelf life.

Orders are processed within 2–5 business days. Because we make everything in small batches by hand, we don’t keep a massive warehouse of inventory. Fresh batches mean better products — and occasionally, a short wait. We always communicate if there’s an extended delay.
